VENTURES AFRICA – Though it is likely to swell more than any other region in the world, video accounts for less than six percent of traffic in mobile networks in Africa, says the Global Internet Phenomena Report 2H2013, released by Sandvine, fixed and mobile operator service provider.

The report, which is published twice a year, is based on the information sourced from more than 250 service providers covering Europe, North America, Africa, Middle East, the Caribbean, Latin America and Asia Pacific.

“While video is a small part of mobile bandwidth in the region today, we predict Africa will be the fastest video adopter and operators will respond with creative device-and application-based service tiers,” David Caputo, the CEO of Sandvine, said.

In addition, the latest report disclosed that the use of Blackberry email and BBM messaging in Africa accounted for more than 13 percent of traffic throughout Africa.

Caputo said the African market is one of its kind because most users are connecting to the Internet for the first time.

Africans are now using applications like Facebook, Skype and WhatsApp, he added.
