VENTURES AFRICA – World No.2 brewer, SABMiller, will inject a further $110 million in the expansion of its Onitsha, Nigeria, brewery, it said on Thursday.

This will triple the plant’s yearly capacity from 700 000 to 2.1 million hectolitres and create 400 direct jobs for locals.

The extension to the plant has been prompted by fastest-growing Hero Lager, which has done very well on the Nigerian market.

Simon Harvey, MD of SABMiller in Nigeria, said the company had made critical investments in Nigeria in the past five years.

“This announcement demonstrates our on-going commitment in the country,” Harvey said.

Goodluck Jonathan, the President of Nigeria, first commissioned the brewery in August 2012.

SABMiller made the first $100 million investment in Onitsha in what was described as the biggest single money injection in Anambra State in almost two decades. The plant currently employs 300 locals.
