VENTURES AFRICA – In a notice likely to trigger aggression from South Africa’s trade unions, gold miner, Harmony Gold, on Thursday said eight bodies of the nine miners who went missing after fire broke out at its Doornkop mine yesterday have been discovered.

The JSE-quoted miner and world-renowned gold miner said rescue workers were still searching for the ninth miner.

The fire was reported at around 18:00 South African time on Tuesday this week after a “seismic event” unleashed a fall of ground, according to Harmony.

It claimed rescue workers were instantly sent underground when it was immediately known that this had occurred.

However, entry to the disturbed area was stymied by smoke and the falling ground, Harmony said.

The missing miners were located at around 07:00 South African time yesterday in an underground refuge chamber, and were brought to surface last night.

Graham Briggs, Harmony CEO, said the board and management extended their condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the men who died.

Earlier this week, Harmony said its quarterly profits were currently sustainable, thanks to the current price of gold.

“We have positioned the company to remain sustainable for many years to come, managing costs and production to ensure profitability at all gold prices,” Briggs said on Monday.
