VENTURES AFRICA – A miner working for platinum producer, Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) has died on Friday morning following the strike that has entered its 5th week.

Citing police spokesperson, Thulani Ngubane, Reuters reported this morning that the worker was attacked and burnt to death by four men at the Amplats mine when he was on his way to work.

This comes at a time when reports have emerged that the rand had weakened against a basket of currencies pulled down by the continued labour strikes in the platinum sector of South Africa.

Talks aimed at ending South Africa’s platinum wage strike have been on-going but no solution has been achieved.

This week CEOs of the three affected companies, Impala Platinum, Lonmin and Amplats complained that if a solution was not found, the company would not even afford to pay the workers the 8 percent salary raise they had offered to the workers.

Platinum workers have demanded R12, 500 ($1100) a month across the board.
